Trama

La storia vera di Charlie Wilson, il deputato americano che negli anni '80 ha finanziato l'invio di armi ai mujahidin,
per respingere l'invasione sovietica dell'Aghanistan. Amante di donne, alcol e cocaina, Wilson riuscì attraverso
un'improbabile alleanza tra il Mossad israeliano, l'Egitto e il Pakistan a far avere alla resistenza afgana ciò di
cui aveva più bisogno: armi e bazooka per abbattere gli elicotteri russi.
Mentre Redford si lancia contro la
politica americana con un quasi-trattato (Leoni per agnelli), Nichols, con il supporto alla sceneggiatura di Aaron
Sorkin, punta sulla farsa. Le due pellicole, in ogni caso, sembrano condividere un punto di vista, quello di mostrare
una strategia estera americana trattata un po' a caso, per motivi interni e spesso con ignoranza. Hollywood mette dunque
in luce gli aspetti più sconclusionati della politica, esibendo una sfiducia nelle istituzioni dal sapore di campagna
elettorale, comunque efficace nel dissacrare quei monumenti intoccabili dell'autorità trattati spesso con reverenza
(la CIA, il Congresso).
Il personaggio lo consentiva e Tom Hanks, seppur inadatto al ruolo del deputato dai facili
costumi, si cala nella parte con intensità burlesca, anche grazie alla compagnia di Julia Roberts e dell'ottimo
Philip Seymour Hofmann. La leggerezza che distingue La guerra di Charlie Wilson avrebbe potuto, tuttavia, esser ben
più incisiva, perché Nichols rende sì grottesca la situazione ma senza graffiare veramente. Ne è la prova il
fatto che la regia, pienamente a suo agio nelle situazioni comiche, è invece ridondante in quelle meramente
politiche.
Nichols ha la preoccupazione che lo spettatore non capisca da solo certe evidenze, mentre pare
curiosamente disinteressato ad altri aspetti della storia. Finisce infatti per smussare la carica satirica
impantanandosi in un'elegia umanitaria un po' fuori tono, per poi trattare sbrigativamente il punto essenziale che
quegli stessi mujahidin si sono ritorti contro l'America stessa. Il che dà l'impressione del compitino ben fatto,
parodia cattivella ma non troppo, divertente e ben ritmata, che merita attenzione più per il film che avrebbe potuto
essere, spingendo più a fondo la satira, che per quello che è. 

Plot

In 1980, Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) is more interested in
partying than legislating, frequently throwing huge galas and staffing his congressional office with young, attractive
women. His social life eventually brings about a federal investigation into allegations of his cocaine use, conducted by
then-federal prosecutor Rudy Giuliani as part of a larger investigation into congressional misconduct. The investigation
results in no charge against Charlie.
A friend and romantic interest, Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts), encourages
Charlie to do more to help the Afghan people, and persuades Charlie to visit the Pakistani leadership. The Pakistanis
complain about the inadequate support of the U.S. to oppose the Soviet Union, and they insist that Charlie visit a major
Pakistan-based Afghan refugee camp. (This and other Afghan scenes were filmed in Morocco.) Charlie is deeply moved by
their misery and determination to fight, but is frustrated by the regional CIA personnel's insistence on a low key
approach against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Charlie returns home to lead an effort to substantially increase
funding to the mujahideen.
As part of this effort, Charlie befriends the maverick CIA operative Gust Avrakotos
(Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his understaffed Afghanistan group to find a better strategy, especially including a means
to counter the Soviets' formidable Mi-24 helicopter gunship. This group was composed in part of members of the CIA's
elite Special Activities Division, including a young paramilitary officer named Michael Vickers (Christopher Denham). As
a result, Charlie's deft political bargaining for the necessary funding and Avrakotos' group's careful planning using
those resources, such as supplying the guerrillas with FIM-92 Stinger missile launchers, turns the Soviet occupation
into a deadly quagmire with their heavy fighting vehicles being destroyed at a crippling rate. The CIA's anti-communism
budget evolves from $5 million to over $500 million (with the same amount matched by Saudi Arabia), startling several
congressmen. This effort by Charlie ultimately evolves into a major portion of the U.S. foreign policy known as the
Reagan Doctrine, under which the U.S. expanded assistance beyond just the mujahideen and began also supporting other
anti-communist resistance movements around the world. Charlie states that senior Pentagon official Michael Pillsbury
persuaded President Ronald Reagan to provide the Stingers to the Afghans: "Ironically, neither Gust nor Charlie was
directly involved in the decision and claims any credit."

Un inedito Tom Hanks nei panni di un politico dongiovanni che si
circonda sempre di donne bellissime, sia nel privato che sul lavoro, tutta la sua crew sembra un ateliere di modelle
anzichè un dipartimento della difesa, gli piace, e non poco, l'alcool, politico realmente esistito, storia realmente
accaduta. Un uomo che, a suo modo, è rimasto nella storia degli States per le opere intraprese e i risultati
ottenuti, risultati non trascurabili ottenuti non facilmente e per vie non del tutto lecite. Il vero volto di Wilson, i
fatti e gli avvenimenti che difficilmente troveremo nei libri di storia. Un film di un certo peso, a mio parere,
imperdibile. Serio, impegnato, a volte complesso, ma anche divertente, irriverente e talmente realistico da lassciare
addirittura perplessi.
Lavoro che, ovviamente, non è destinato a tutti, ma solo a coloro a cui piace il cinema
verità, a coloro che interessa la storia e vuole conoscerla per come è stata realmente nella maniera piu cruda,
non trasformata in favola dove i buoni vincono sempre e i cattivi perdono. Poi, tra l'altro, chi decide chi sono i buoni
e i cattivi? Di solito gli storeici, pressati dai governi, quello che questo film fa, è darci una scelta, far
decidere solamente a noi chi sono i buoni, un politico fa del bene per il proprio paese? E' giusto, è il suo lavoro,
ma quale è il prezzo? Quanto costa quel bene? inoltre, ne vale veramente la pena? Le spese superano le imprese?
Sono interrogativi che, purtroppo, ci poniamo sempre meno frequentemente, l'iformazione moderna ci mette in condizione
di dare per scontato chi sono i buoni e i cattivi, cercano di impedirci di decidere cosa è bene o male per noi,
forse, anche se solo in parte, questo film ci da una visione molto piu cruda e veritiera e ci fa riflettere molto su chi
siamo, cosa abbiamo, ma, soprattutto, come lo otteniamo.
Guardate il film, ne vale davvero la pena e ne vale la
pena creare una discussione su di esso, con gli amici o i parenti, con i nostri figli o, addirittura, in un forum.
Facciamoci delle domande, cerchiamo di capire come funzionano le mosse diplomatiche e chi le manovra e cosa otteniamo da
esse.
Mi raccomando, come sempre, il seed e gustatevi il film. Se perdete qualcosa alla prima visione, non
preoccupatevi e guadatelo nuovamente, sicuramente è questo il caso.
Per quanto riguarda la qualità è molto
buona, un altro mio rip con diverse tracce audio, perfetto in ogni passaggio. Buona visione e, come diceva Renzo Arbore,
"Meditate gente; meditate".
